veterinary interventions (therapies, surgeries, veterinary administrative, immobilization etc.). Within the
department of birds there were 406 treatments: 259 internal, 34 surgeries, 7 anaesthetic ones, 56 cases of
placing chips and 50 autopsies. Within the department of mammals there were 384 treatments: 313 internal,
27 surgeries, 41 anaesthetic ones and immobilizations, 11 cases of placing chips and 22 autopsies. Within the
department of reptiles there were 155 treatments: 24 internal, 7 surgeries, 120 cases of placing chips and
4 autopsies. Further parts of the Annual report are detailed reports of curators of individual sub-sections of
the zoological department. They contain the most important problems of the last year, breeding of young
animals and such. The article “Return of the king” deals with the arrival of two lion males in the zoo after
12 years. The next article describes the first historical breeding of the Common Genet – a quadruplet. Other
following reports: visit of falconers from Banská Štiavnica, experience with rearing and breeding of the
Madagascan Boa, a short history of the breeding of orangutans in the zoo of Bojnice since 2008, the main
article about Kiran – off-spring of the year 2009 – the first breeding of the Bornean Orangutan in Slovakia,
article about the ZOO Bojnice helping to save the West-African primates – as a member of the union WAPCA
– which makes it the first Slovak zoo taking a direct part in an “in situ” project in the third world. Further
articles about breeding contain a report about triple breeding cases of the rare Greater Vasa Parrot. A non-
typical and very unusual article deals with the breeding of an endangered butterfly – the Mountain Apollo
in the ZOO Bojnice, which is another example of activities within a native “in situ” project. The last article
deals with introducing of a male of the Roloway Guenon with a female in 2009. At the end there is a brief
history and reflection about the ZOO Bojnice taking part in the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums
(WAZA) so far as well as a report from a scientific conference Research of Mammals in Slovakia.
OTHER DEPARTMENTS
In 2009 the Zoological garden of Bojnice was visited by 346 257 visitors, of whom 345 190 paid for tickets. The
entrance fee for the zoo was as follows: adults 2.50 eur, children (4-15 years), handicapped pensioners with
a valid card 1.30 eur, daily students, pensioners 1.60 eur, children taking part in educational programmes
in the zoo-school 0.70 eur and children from families in financial need 0.50 eur. The original schedule of
an ordinary transfer to fulfill the plan of main tasks of our organization was approved with the sum of 819
819.00 eur. Our ordinary transfer was changed by 150 000.00 eur by the budget proceedings Nr. 1/2009.
The provided capital transfer was 0.00 eur. In 2009, the zoological garden covered 43.39 % of the operating
costs by its own incomings. The overall revenue was 1 883 339.72 eur, the overall costs were 1 864 589.18
eur and the profit 18 750.54 eur. The year 2009 was connected with a festive opening of the 1st part of the
Educational Carpathian path with capital costs of cca 3.75 mil. Sk. Another larger investment construction
was the reconstruction of a boiler room in the pavilion of elephants, with total costs of 19,500 eur. This
reconstruction was a result of the need to burn up scrap wood in the zoo. In the field of projects, following
projects were provided: 2nd part of the Educational Carpathian path, reconstruction and extension of the
winter ground for water birds, reconstruction and finishing of the entrance area of the zoo, aviary for birds
and mammals and a circle aviary. The section of animal nutrition provided food for animals of the ZOO
Bojnice as well as for animals in the Rescue Centre (confiscated and arrested) in 2009 as it was requested
by the zoological department. Financial costs for food in 2009 were 168 443.76 € in total. In 2009 the
ZOO Bojnice was visited by 346 257 visitors (99 850 children and 27 302 students). This group formed the
essential part of members of educational events. Tasks of the crime prevention in 2009 were based on the
Proposal of specialization and main tasks of crime prevention in the ZOO Bojnice for the years 2007-2010.
The educational activity in the ZOO Bojnice, as a member of the European Association of Zoological Gardens
and Aquariums, included the issue of the actual campaign declared by the association for the year 2009.
The campaign dedicated to European carnivores was started with the event called “They live with us here
in Slovakia…”, which took place on 22nd April 2009 (Earth Day) Another event, based on the campaign EAZA,
was the Giving name party of a Brown Bear cub (23rd May 2009). The youngest visitors learned about the
issue of protection of European carnivores at the celebration of the Children´s Day (1st June 2009). The
European carnivores served as the topic of the first prepared activity “Painting like magic”. The topic of
carnivores was the subject of student papers at the School of Utility Design in Ružomberok. Celebrating
the Children´s Day on 1st June, children could make a tour in the ZOO for a symbolic entrance fee of 0.03
eur. The ZOO staff prepared a rich programme for them. The biggest media attraction was “carnivores of
the offspring of the year”, which took place on 11th September 2009. In 2008 and 2009, the ZOO Bojnice
participated in 5 requests for an unreturnable financial benefit from structural funds of the European
Union. Four requests were filed within the Operational Programme of Environment (OPŽP), the priority one:
Protection and Regeneration of the Natural Environment and Landscape, in the fifth project we serve as an
international partner of the Zoological garden Hodonín, within the programme of international cooperation
Czech Republic – Slovak Republic. All 5 projects were passed and are now in various stages of realization.
