               SUMMARY

               ZOOLOGICAL DEPARTMENT

Number of animal species (31.12.2009): 384
               Number of animals: 2050
Number of animals and species within European breeding programmes EEP: 25
Number of species in European and world studbooks ESB and ISB: 24
Number of species in CITES A: 68

Caring for handicapped animals, we accepted 75 specimens of 25 species (15 species of CITES and 10 species
of our protected animals) in our rehabilitation centre between 1.1.2009 and 31.12.2009. At the same time
we received 12 specimens of 7 non-original species in our Rescue Centre. Two people from our zoo staff took
part in the Annual conference EAZA, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Besides several bilateral negotiations related
to the transport of our animals, we took part in all-day marathons of meetings and workshops of various
expert groups (TAG) and attended also a closed meeting of the union WAPCA, which our zoo is an active
member of. Within the EEP of our most precious animal – the Roloway Guenon, we took important action –
exchange of a male with the ZOO Romagne, which is an attempt to increase chances for reproduction of the
most endangered primate in world zoos. We succeeded also in the first breeding of the Bornean Orangutan in
the history of our zoo as well as within Slovakia, only 4 young animals were born within the whole European
programme EEP this year. This outstanding success was awarded also at the European Conference EAZA in
Copenhagen. Positive news is our success in confirming the breeding EEP of the Cotton-top Tamarin, for the
second time already, which means that the parents got stabilized. We also managed to breed the ISB of the
Cuban Rock Iguana, although there was no breeding in the EEP of the Red-crowned Amazon, we noticed a
promising attempt to hatch eggs and breed young birds. We had a traditionally good cooperation within the
EEP for the Fishing Cat, where we participated in the research survey about the breeding of this species.
Within the EEP of the species Hartmann´s Zebra, another female was born, which is great news for the
European population, as females are not born very often. In the EEP programme of the Persian Leopard, we
acquired a young male and the head of the zoological department was elected a member of the European
Committee (TAG) for Persian Leopards at the end of the year. After long time of unsuccessful searching
we managed to pair the Southern Cassowary and the Steller´s Sea Eagle. We continued in reorganizing of
breeding herds of ungulates: we acquired a new male of the West Caucasian Turs, of a totally non-related
blood-line (Tallinn, San Diego). In case of the Chattering Lory, we made an exchange of a specimen to
increase the perspective of reproduction. Within the ESB of the Brown Bear, we managed to place two
young males to Weilburg in Germany. Within the ESB of the Greater Kudu, two young animals were bred,
serial number 16 a 17 – still at a 100%-success rate of breeding since the breeding beginning in our zoo.
Within the ESB of the Red-bellied Tamarin, there was an intensive communication during the whole year, a
unique breeding of only 1 young animal was added. The number of species within the ESB species list was
increased by one specimen of the Emerald Tree Monitor (Varanus prasinus), brought from the University
vivarium in Nitra. As a new species of ESB of our collection, we got a precious species of the Pancake Tortoise
(Malacochersus tornieri) from the Irish ZOO Dublin. As an activity of the Union of Czech and Slovak Zoos, the
zoological department provided for punctual sending of data to the Yearbook of the union. Two people from
our zoo staff took part in the meeting of expert committees of UCSZ for primates and felids in Senec near
Bratislava. The head of the zoological department was leading the negotiations of the group as a coordinator
of UCSZ for big felids breeding, worked out a bulletin BAGHIRA Nr.5 and presented a report of the activity
within the whole union. The curator of primates as a curator of the Committee of UCSZ for Tamarins was
running a separate meeting, presented the newest bulletin called MIDAS Nr. 1 and presented a report about
delivering a male of the orangutan, in form of a power point presentation. The zoological department staff
also took part in education activities, as usually. They prepared several new promotional materials.
During the year, there was no new exhibit added, only a small exhibit of tamarins in the pavilion of primates.
Within the campaign of EAZA, dedicated to European carnivores, there was opened a new so called
Carpathian Natural Trail – a reconstructed path with new cobbles leading between the expositions of our
fauna. It contains a reconstructed frontage of a double-exposition of wolfs and a completely reconstructed
exposition of the lynx. The exposition of lions and three terrariums (outside doors) were also reconstructed,
the area meant for Sable Antelopes (including the run) as well as the indoor space for transporting of the
Greater Kudu underwent the largest renovation. At the end of the year, the terrain started to be prepared
for placing of three breeding houses for an Australian exhibit.
A complete veterinary service was secured for all 365 days within the year. Altogether, there were 1051
